Local Council Update
Remodelers Making the News
Log Home Receives Much Needed Facelift

Built in the 1840s, the log home was a family homestead in nearby Evansville, Ind., that was donated by the family of Nina Lance of the Lance Cabinet Shop in the 1980s before it was relocated to a site along the Ohio River in Newburgh where it now serves as a historic landmark and is used as a public gathering place and the site of a community farmers’ market.

“About 10 years ago the log home was given some upkeep, but its age was really showing,” said Ryan Helstley, of Evansville Garage Doors. “The remodelers council decided to donate time and materials to spruce it up.”

After rescheduling the project twice because of rain, volunteers spent a day in late June restoring the log home — resealing all the logs, rechinking the mortar and restaining the logs and trim.

PPG Porter Paints, Heidorn Construction and Scheessele & Sons Construction donated the materials. The remodelers council purchased the exterior stain for the project.

“Every year we choose a charitable project,” said Heltsley. “We decided this would be a benefit to the community and all the people who visit and appreciate the log home.”

In addition to the annual remodeling project, at Thanksgiving the group organizes, prepares and delivers turkey dinners to needy families in the area and makes a donation to a local charity from money the group raises throughout the year.
